Adventures with Crossdressing Sword Girls

In recent months I have been consuming so much crossdressing girl in disguise media! It’s become my major comfort trope of the moment.

I grew up on a certain kind of girl power story about how women are just as good as men and can do all the same things. I later came to see how this kind of story undervalues feminine things and domestic labor and to value those things more, but this type of story still holds deep appeal to me. There’s something so satisfying about seeing young women succeed against the odds.

However, before I got into Chinese media several years ago I hadn’t read or watched many stories like this in a long time. I was mostly reading adult SFF where I wasn’t aware of many stories like that. Even as I started to get into Chinese stuff it took a while to get back to this beloved trope, as I started with stories that centered men. These shows aren't all crossdressing girls but they make a thematic cluster.

I slowly started watching dramas featuring extraordinary young women succeeding in traditionally masculine fields like in The Moon Brightens for You orA Girl Like Me and remembering how much I enjoyed this kind of thing

But watching The Long Ballad really reawakened my hunger for this kind of story. The main character in that drama, Li Changge, not only crossdresses and is good at fighting, but she’s exactly the kind of super smart chaos muppet that I love. Plus while Changge falls into the “not like other girls” trope, her best friend Li Leyan is more traditionally feminine and they are the most important people in each others lives. (It’s just a really good show! The character arches for everyone are also excellent!)

At the start of this year I was really craving something comforting to watch, so I watched my first ever Korean drama, Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung. This is not actually a crossdressing drama. Instead, our main character is one of the first women allowed to become an official historian, the officers of the court charged with writing down everything that happens as it happens for posterity. It's a show that gave me a lot of thoughts and feelings about history and an institution and practice.

While this show doesn’t have crossdressing, I do want to call attention to the way the male lead is extremely princess coded. He’s a prince who has been locked in a tower his whole life, he leaves out rice for the birds, at one point he wears a flower crown, and he’s always the one swooning or having his wrist grabbed. (He’s also a chaos muppet and I love him so much!)

Another thing that I love about Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung is that it deals with people in constrained circumstances taking what agency they can. That makes it sound kinda grim and it's not really. It's also one of the few stories that I know of that depicts monarchy but doesn't endorse it. Overall I really like how this show talks about political change and personal agency.

After that I watched Sungkyunkwan Scandal, another Korean drama about a woman scholar. This one does feature crossdressing. The main character disguises herself as a man to go to an all male school. It's a lot of fun. The political stuff isn't as good as in Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung but there's friendship and shenanigans. I gather it's a bit of a classic of this sub genre. I also especially enjoyed the fic for this one.

Another similar drama that I enjoyed is A Love Story of Oiled Paper Umbrella, about a plucky young woman who wants to be a demon hunter. This one features crossdressing but none of the women who crossdress are in disguise as men– they are just wearing men's clothes. It's actually really fun! The costumes are inspired by the Tang dynasty and we know women in the Tang dynasty crossdressed like this a lot but I don't see it in shows much. I actually really love the whole textile aesthetics of this show! So bright and colorful, with all kinds of mixing and matching!

The show also features an interesting friendship between the female lead and the second female lead. I wish it had gotten more screen time! There's lots of interesting characters and the plot really goes places and I liked it a lot!

I also just finished watching In A Class of Her Own, the Chinese remake of Sungkyunkwan Scandal. It made me think a lot about adaptation choices. I wouldn't have said Sungkyunkwan Scandal was grim or anything but In A Class of Her Own is an even softer version. I didn't love how Sungkyunkwan Scandal handled queerness but it was the only one of these shows that acknowledged that queer people exist. It's kinda strange watching the Chinese version get around some of that. “I'd rather have a life long friend than a wife” just doesn’t have the same impact as “Maybe I'm gay!”

Actually, given how queer the whole theme of crossdressing girls feels to me, all these shows are pretty heterosexual. I would love to see a trans version of this! Changge in The Long Ballad has a lot of gender vibes but mostly these shows don't even get that close. These days SFF has more room for queerness than in my youth but these types of stories are not very popular in the genre at the moment. Meanwhile these stories seem popular in Asian media but so far I haven’t encountered queer versions there either. I know in China queerness is censored, though there are a few f/f novels with crossdressing that I haven’t read yet. Meanwhile I’m just dipping my toes into dramas from outside of China. So I’m still looking for stories that lend more into queer potential of crossdressing girls.
Despite that, this trope still brings me a lot of joy! I love stories about women having agency and living lives outside of narrow gender roles. It's been a lot of fun diving into them. There's so many of these shows and I've barely scratched the surface. I'm looking forward to watching even more of them and maybe reading some novels along these lines as well. Please tell me about your favorites!

Guest Post: How Illumicrate’s Platforming of "Rose in Chains" Betrays Their Values

Di talks about science fiction, fantasy, and nonfiction on her Booktube channel BookishDi and is one of the founders of the SFF book and fandom discussion show Stitch & Bitch. She can be found on BlueSky talking about books, politics, and women's sports.

On Wednesday, April 16, the UK Supreme Court issued a ruling on the legal definition of “woman” that excluded trans women. This case challenging the Equality Act was funded in large part by JK Rowling, and she celebrated the ruling with a series of disgusting, transphobic tweets. This is just her latest action to stigmatize trans women and destroy their ability to exist in public life in the UK. Coincidentally, the same day, UK based subscription box Illumicrate announced a special edition of the upcoming book, Rose in Chains by Julie Soto. This novel is based off of her hit Draco/Hermione fanfic, "The Auction", the premise of which is Voldermort winning the war and Hermione being sold into sexual slavery to Draco Malfoy. But don’t worry, he’s a good fascist and treats her well enough that she’s willing to defend the nice Nazis (I mean Death Eaters) when their actions come to trial. Plot points and names that directly identify it as HP have been changed for the trad pub release, but at its core it is still Harry Potter fanfiction.

I mostly post about: things happening in my life and anything i'm making/thinking about

My hobbies are: drawing, writing, making/listening to music, playing guitar, making websites. i've also been trying to get back into learning japanese lately

My fandoms are: undertale/deltarune is the most consistent, but i do get super into other media now and then (some others: oneshot, ace attorney, steven universe, inscryption, murder drones)

I'm looking to meet people who: i jive with, and hopefully share some of my interests/hobbies

My posting schedule tends to be: every few days, depending on how busy i am

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:

  • those who support or feel neutrally about trump
  • anti-queer, racist, etc.
  • those who post/interact heavily with dead dove content
    • incest and minor/adult ships make me very uncomfortable

Before adding me, you should know: i'm very bad at talking to people (possibly neurodivergent) but i do try my best

Bunnies are of course going to favor weedy green lawns over elegant stone yards punctuated with waxy sculptural ornamentals. This one looks like an Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus); Marsh Rabbits (S. palustris) (1), tend to have shorter ears, and my neighborhood strikes me as a bit too far from the water to attract them during the dry season.

It’s on alert, reacting sensibly to the arrival of a member of the deadliest of the Thousand, and so this was the only shot I was able to get before it went PATWINNNG! under the seagrape bed (the round-leaved shrub at center right, bordered by white river rocks.)

Yes; that Hugh Hefner funded endangered rabbit research, and was commemorated accordingly.

Why, hello there, lovely people of Dreamwidth! My friends list has become a little quiet as of late, so I thought I'd try and find a few nice new individuals to get to know :)

Name: Tina

Age: I turn 37 years old in 20 days - you do the math :P

I mostly post about: my daily life (including pictures), anything that goes through my head and I feel like reflecting on, things I've done, occasional travel reports, weekly "What are you reading Wednesday" posts. My journal is very much a "real life" one, since I am not into fandom - it's more than okay if you are, though!

My hobbies are: Reading, listening to music, podcasts (mostly True Crime), taking walks, doing jigsaw puzzles (I just finished a 1000 piece one of the Iguazu Falls in South America), travelling, going to concerts, hanging out with friends, trying out new restaurants/cafés...

My fandoms are: I don't have fandoms, so I'll just list a few favourites of mine

Music: lately I have been really into The Warning, The Last Dinner Party and Taylor Swift. Other bands/artists I like are: Within Temptation, Nightwish, Tegan & Sara, Amy Shark, Bring me the Horizon, A Day to Remember, Alan Doyle, Great Big Sea, Derina Harvey Band, Emilie Autumn, Kellie Loder, Freya Ridings, Ice Nine Kills, Florence & the Machine, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, DeathbyRomy...I love a great variety of music! Feel free to recommend me something you'd think I'd like ;)

Books: "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov, "The Wrong Boy" by Willy Russell, "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides, "The Future Of Another Timeline" by Annalee Newitz, anything by Eowyn Ivey, anything by Charlotte McConaghy (I can't wait to get my hands on her new one which just came out!), "The Kangaroo Chronicles" by Marc-Uwe Kling, "Orlando" by Virginia Woolf, and lots of thrillers/murder mysteries. I also admit that I still have a bit of nostalgia for the Harry Potter series, although I cannot with a good conscience read/watch/buy anything related to them anymore, for known reasons...

TV shows: Stranger Things, Wednesday, Son of a Critch (although I still need to watch the latest season!), Law & Order:SVU, Is it Cake?, This Hour Has 22 Minutes. A recent one that's made a huge impression on me was Adolescence, it was both shocking and thought-provoking. In the past I also enjoyed Pushing Daisies, The Nanny & Call the Midwife.

Movies: Anything starring Meryl Streep - I adore her ♥ I am also a huge nerd for Godzilla and monster movies in general, under which I count all kinds of "animal horror" flicks. They are just fun to watch, even if most of them aren't very good xD
In general, I don't watch as many movies as other people seem to, but some other favourites are: Despicable Me series, Minions (yeah, I know, I'm so ~uncool...), The Secret Life Of Pets, 10 Lives, The Twelve Tasks of Asterix, Kinsey, Forrest Gump, If these Walls Could Talk II, The Chinese Botanist's Daughters, Creep 1 & 2. I like found footage-style horror movies a lot, too, even though I haven't seen that many of those yet. Again, feel free to rec me some :)

I'm looking to meet people who: are kind, empathetic, understanding and funny. While common interests are always a plus, they aren't necessary - some of my best friends I have met on here have had barely anything in common with me when it comes to the things we like :)
I love reading about what you love, what makes you happy, fascinates and motivates you on this journey called life ;)

Honestly, one of my favourite things about people is listening/reading/watching them talk about their passions, seeing their eyes light up and them just being happy and excited. It's wonderful to me in these cynical times when somebody isn't ashamed to show enthusiasm ♥

My posting schedule tends to be: daily/weekly/monthly/sporadic/etc.

I aim for at least once weekly, twice when you count my "What are you reading Wednesday". I also try my best to read my friends list and comment at least once a week...these past few months I have been quite stressed with various health problems which made me too exhausted a lot of the time. However, I am getting better and am determined to be a good DW friend now!

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: supporters of Trump and any of his ilk, and generally Far Right politics. I would say the usual bigotry but lbr, who thinks of themselves as a bigot? I am a huge proponent of "live and let live, as long as you don't harm others".

I have a few mental illnesses which means I can be quite sensitive and might post a rant or two once in a while. While I have gotten a lot better over the past couple years, mine is not a ~positive vibes only kind of journal, so if you want that, I am probably not the friend for you. That's not meant to sound mean, but I just want to feel comfortable writing about everything on my mind without worrying that it might become too much for somebody. Hope that makes sense?

Otherwise, I love meeting people from all walks of life - I am a curious person so it's great to be able to get a glimpse into the lives of people from all over the world and all kinds of lifestyles. Journalling has expanded my horizons quite a lot and made me grow as a person, which is fantastic.

Before adding me, you should know: I have a cat called Lucy, who I will post pictures of on a regular basis. So you better like cats :P

Phew, I think I pretty much covered enough ground here! I hope this didn't make anyone fall asleep, lol. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Also, please do comment on here before adding me, thank you very much!

Remember where you were and what you were doing on 8 April 2024?

I sure do!

I’m something of an astronomy nerd; you have to understand that the great solar eclipse of 8 April 2024 was something I’d been counting down to my whole life. In my native Dayton, Ohio, I’d gotten to witness the strange begrimed 40-watt sunlight (1) and dappled crescent shadows of the partial solar eclipses of 10 May 1994 and 21 August 2017, after having gotten a fleeting confirmatory glance through SolarShields under welder’s goggles: the exercise was a bit like hunting basilisks or Medusa.

Another point is that I’m acutely homesick for the seasonal markers of the place where I spent 90+% of my life: the violets and wild chives and flowering crabapples, and the two equinoctial yellows of Moraine honeylocusts: neon chartreuse foliage in the spring, and in the fall flaming saffron—turning to orange piles of cornflake crunch beneath the feet. Even the lawn weeds here are unfamiliar.

Until a couple years in advance—by which time it was too late—I had not anticipated that, by the time the total solar eclipse at long last came to Dayton, I would be gone; behold the southern Gulf Coast of Florida’s experience of the Grand Portentuous Celestial Event.

Hello! (^.^)

Name: Wren or Ainmhidh

Age: 20s

I mostly post about: Well, really nothing yet! I plan on talking about plurality, alterhumanity, Minecraft, and my other interests, like Livly Island and Will Wood... I talk about this a little more in depth in my introductory post on my journal.

My hobbies are: It's difficult to have hobbies while in college lol. I suppose my hobbies would be drawing, listening to music, Livly Island, video games, HTML & CSS coding...

My fandoms are: I don't really do fandoms these days, but besides Will Wood and Livly Island, I love Vocaloid, Splatoon, and I'm a furry!

I'm looking to meet people who: Share my interests, seem interesting, seem fun to talk to... Any combination of those. I like reading people's personal posts... Let's share our thoughts with each other 🙂

My posting schedule tends to be: I don't have one yet! It'll depend on how much I have to talk about and how many people I'm engaging with here. I've posted twice today, for what that's worth.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:
* Anti-kink, "anti-proship", etc.
* TERF, anti-LGBTQ+, etc.
* Too much political posting. It just isn't what I'm looking for here!
* I'm not really interested in journals that are mostly fic.

Before adding me, you should know:
* There will probably be complaining on my journal, but I don't plan on having it be all the time.
* I'm brand new here!! So I'm still figuring out the norms and etiquette. Feel free to advise me if you're so inclined.
* I consider myself autistic, queer, and alterhuman. So be cool with those things!!
* I don't consider myself "proship" but I will discuss "dead dove" content on a separate journal.
* I'm not going to make a laundry list of opinions but if there's something you want to know, feel free to ask ^_^
